Stories hiding in songs
Anyone that has read more than 3 posts on this blog knows that I am a self-confessed music addict. I listen to everything except for country and gangsta rap. My current Imeem playlist goes from Bjork to Deftones, then from The Smiths to Mos Def. Anyway…
A song popped up on my playlist this morning that I had heard before but never really listened to. Well I listened this morning and I instantly had the stirrings of a story idea in my head.
The song is title “Archie and Veronica” and the band is Lovage. Lovage is a trip-hop, pseudo-moody group comprised of Mr. Mike Patton of Faith No More (and about 50 other projects), Jennifer Charles of Elysian Fields and Dan the Automator (also of about 50 or so projects).
Anyway, just listen to the lyrics. (YouTube still-photo posted rather than the actual streaming song because WordPress sucks like that). The best part comes at the end when Jennifer Charles whispers/sings “Jealous of the flies and worms inside me.” If her voice wasn’t as sexy as it is, I don’t think this would be half as creepy.
So if you have a while, I think this song is a very nice exercise in flash fiction and writing on a spur of the moment flare. While the lyrics tell a story themselves (is that a word?), I think there are about a billion other directions you could go with it.
Also, if you dig this song, I highly suggest checking out the rest of the album titled Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By.

I have a story based on the traditional song “My Cindy.” There’s a line in there that goes something like, “She’s so sweet, the honeybees swarm around her mouth.” Such a horrific image to me.

I have one song based on a musical. Of course it’s a novella, so it will be many moons before it’s ever published!
